Do-In (pronounced "Doe-een") is an ancient form of self-massage, originating in China. In this particular form, all the major meridians of the body are stimulated with rhythmic, percussive tapping. The hands are usually held in loose fists, with relaxed wrists joints. Special attention is given to tonic acupressure points, which often correspond with the motor points in the bellies of the muscles of the body. According to Asian bodywork traditions -- including acupressure, Shiatsu, and acupuncture -- a meridian is a pathway or channel for the flow of energy or "chi" in the body. They usually follow along the long bones, nerves, muscles, and fascia of the body. I learned this form in the early 1980s from various Shiatsu teachers I was fortunate to study with in Idaho and Colorado. The practice of Do-In is very stimulating and energizing, while at the same time relaxing, as it allows the practitioner to let go of unnecessary tension in the body. This form of exercise is also a great warm-up for practitioners of Comfort Touch(R), the nurturing form of acupressure/Shiatsu I developed for working with special populations. Safe enough for infants and elderly, it can be used for anyone in need of a caring touch. As you can see from the video, it is wonderful to practice Do-In outside in nature.
