Cancer is uncontrollable growth of cells which invade the underlying tissues and cause destruction of the surrounding structures. Orofacial cancers are the cancers that are seen in the mouth and the facial region. These are the 6th most common cancers worldwide. In the past 20 years , the incidence had increased, these include the cancers of the cheek, lip, tongue, floor of the mouth, soft palate, throat and the sinus. These can be life threatening if not identified and treated in the earlier stages. So what should you look out for cancer? Presence of any lumps or thickening of the tissues of the mouth and the surrounding tissues, unexplained bleeding, unexplained loss of sensation of the region, velvety white or red patches, hoarseness of voice, persistence of ulcers for a period of two to three weeks which do not heal and dramatic weight loss. You might be at a higher risk of cancer of you are a smoker or a tobacco user. Even alcohol cases more of a risk factor for cancer. Family history causes a risk factor for cause of cancer and excessive exposure to the sun also causes cancer. Do not smoke or use any forms of tobacco. Eat a well-balanced diet along with physical exercise, avoid of too much of sun exposure regularly so that any problems can be identified in the initial stages itself.
