Set against the backdrop of Hawaii’s lush islands and inspired by the power of ocean volcanoes, the story follows Uku, a lonely volcano who sings his longing for companionship across millions of years. Unbeknownst to him, Lele, another volcano beneath the sea, hears his song and gradually surfaces, ultimately reviving Uku and merging with him to form a single island of love. This dialogue-free short is driven entirely by Murphy’s tender ukulele ballad, performed by Kuana Torres Kahele (Uku) and Nāpua Greig (Lele), and inspired by Israel Kamakawiwoʻole’s rendition of “Somewhere Over the Rainbow”. Technically, Lava pushed boundaries with sweeping scale—realized through helicopter-style camera moves and detailed CG foliage—and expressive volcano “faces” composed of sliding plates rather than typical animation rigs. #Pixar #Lava #CartoonReaction #FirstTimeWatching #2014 #MusicalShort
