Tuning up a FT-101ZD (Mk 0) I am doing this into a dummy load so you can't hear the noise peak very well when turning the pre-selector but if you listen closely, you can hear the static peak. You can do most of the tuning into a dummy load off-air and then do the final trimming in a few seconds once the actual antenna is switched in in most cases. Plate and pre-selector start around the "40 meter' mark (since I have the radio on 40 meters). Mode is in the "Tune" position. Loading control is around the "4" mark (mostly because that's where I usually end up on 40 meters). I usually use the mic button to key the rig instead of the MOX selection on the VOX knob but they both do the same thing. Steps: Meter control is on "IC" Turn up AF gain (volume) - turn the pre-selector until the static peaks (gets loudest) MOX = On : check the idle current (bias adjustment is under the top lid if necessary - be aware that there are extremely high voltages under the lid of these and not just in the final compartment! You could find yourself on the bad end of 800+ volts. When in doubt, if you don't know what you're doing, don't touch anything until you have read the manual, checked the schematic, and checked what you're about to touch with a "Chicken Stick." It's a good idea to check anything you're about to touch with a multi-meter to see if there is any voltage present; a "chicken stick" is easy to build - Google has plenty of good examples!). MOX = Off (don't keep the transmitter keyed up for more than 8-10 seconds or so as this puts a lot of strain on the final tubes; 6146's are plentiful but it can be an expensive lesson if you burn them out :) ). Increase drive slightly MOX = On : turn pre-selector so the IC meter shows the max value then turn the plate control until you see the IC meter at the lowest possible point (AKA "dip the plate"). Turn the Loading control slightly clockwise to increase the IC reading MOX = Off for a second or so MOX = On : dip the plate again (I adjusted the pre-selector and loading again in the video just to be sure out of habit) MOX = Off (got to let those finals cool!) Increase drive (if you're trying to get the hang of the process, you can increase a little bit more; in the video, I increased to max because my dummy load gets warm quickly and because I'm pretty sure my 3 year old was in the other room getting into something she shouldn't have lol) MOX = On : dip the plate and adjust the pre-selector and loading as indicated above MOX = Off Switch the meter to PO (Power Out) MOX = On : adjust plate, loading, and pre-selector for max power out; stop turning the knobs when the meter is at max deflection. MOX = Off because I'm taking longer than usual because of the video (I think the 3 year old was getting herself some Cheerios lol) MOX = On : One last adjustment of the 3 controls just to be sure MOX = Off (yep, Cheerios) MOX = On just to take a peek at the meter in PO MOX = Off Switch meter to IC MOX = On just to a peek at the IC reading Switch to your desired mode and you're ready to transmit! The last few steps were not really necessary but I wanted to show you the meter readings with max output from the radio. It seems like a lot but after you do it a few times, you'll be tuned up in just a few seconds and it'll be second nature.
