It was 3pm, 3hours before the festival started, but the Eizan line was already full of Kurama Fire Festival enthusiasts. We were told the festival attracts 1000s of people but we weren't aware it was going to be this popular. The thought of a 'fire' festival was a bit nerve wrecking but the fire festival was held in a very controlled environment with policemen ushering crowds and making sure the fire was under control. The Kurama Fire Festival is believed to have started by Emperor Suzaku in the Heian period. The festival involves people of the village setting fire to torches (some are 5ms long) chanting and parading around the neighborhood in unity. The purpose of this celebration is to guide the spirits of departed souls through the human world by the light of the lit up torches.
