The Ummah Is Built Through Families – The Making of an Ummah | Ramadan Night 20

As the Prophet ﷺ entered Madinah, beginning the historic task of building the Muslim Ummah, he addressed the people with a powerful set of instructions: “Spread peace. Feed others. Maintain family ties. Pray at night while people sleep.” In this reflection we explore the third instruction: Maintaining family ties (صلة الأرحام). A society may have justice and charity, yet still collapse if it becomes a collection of isolated individuals. The Ummah of Muhammad ﷺ is not simply a population. It is families connected to families. Drawing on the Qur’an and the example of the Prophet ﷺ, we reflect on how strong family ties protect society, transmit values to the next generation, and serve as the social backbone of the Ummah. As we enter the last ten nights of Ramadan, we are reminded not to journey to Allah alone, but to take our families along with us.
