How To Grow Pawpaw Trees And Build Sun Protection For Young Trees

Pawpaw trees (asimina triloba) are fruit trees that are native to North America. In fact, the pawpaw is North America's largest native fruit. Simply wandering through the woods, you may stumble across a pawpaw patch! Despite the paw paw being common in nature, it is actually one of the rare fruit trees to find in someone's garden. Not many people know about paw paw trees! The pawpaw fruit is nicknamed the Appalachian Banana because it has a flavor similar to a banana and a texture like custard. Some say they have hints of vanilla and a tropical mango-like flavor. The paw paw tree is very cold hardy down to Zone 5! When growing pawpaw trees, they require two unique pawpaw varieties for cross-pollination. If you plant pawpaw seedlings, any two seedlings will do since they are genetically unique. If growing grafted varieties, you'll need two different named varieties. The two trees in this video are the Prima pawpaw and Nyomi's Delicious pawpaw. When young, the pawpaw tree must be kept out of direct sunlight. They are understory trees, so sun protection in the form of shade cloth is recommended. After the trees age and harden off to the sun, growing pawpaw is easy! They make a great addition as edible landscaping or as an understory tree to a food forest. The paw paw are rare fruits because they don't ship well or store well for commercial distribution, so if you want pawpaw fruits, you'll have to grow the trees yourself!
