Lotus Hotel: • THE DARK HISTORY OF THE LOTUS HOTEL AND CAFE Once upon a time the Plaza Blocks, two park blocks in downtown Portland, Oregon, was segregated… not based on race, but by sex. This is the story of Chapman Square (the woman’s block) and Lownsdale Square (the men’s block). For almost 90 years (technically) there were rules in place that kept the parks this way. In this video I go back to the early days of the Plaza Blocks and the circumstances that led to them becoming like this as well as the gradual deterioration of these rules leaving both park blocks open to everyone.
