Be diligent to read our own mind. Both the wholesome and unwholesome causes arise at the mind, nowhere else. When the mind is fabricated by unwholesomeness, it thinks, speaks, acts and lives unwholesomely. But when it is fabricated by wholesomeness, it thinks, speaks, acts and lives wholesomely, then the noble path can be fulfilled. So, for our practice, nothing is better than reading our own mind. I'm not making this up myself. The Buddha and all masters have taught so, “The mind is the master, is the boss, is the commander.” Luangpu Man has taught, “Reaching the mind is reaching dhamma, not reaching the mind is not reaching dhamma.” From the Buddha’s time to our time, the masters that I studied with, all of them focus on the mind. For people that just started off, the master would advise them to start with calm meditation, and then contemplate the body, which is one foundation of mindfulness. Then, their mindfulness and concentration will be stronger. After that they'll be ready to develop wisdom, they will see the truth, which is the three characteristics of rūpa and nāma, the body and the mind. So, be mindful with our own mind, get to know our own mind. We want to know many things, but nothing is better than knowing our own mind, nothing is better than searching into our mind.
