Fierce clashes broke out late Saturday along the Pakistan–Afghanistan border after Afghan Taliban fighters reportedly attacked Pakistani military posts, sparking hours of intense gunfire and retaliatory strikes that left dozens dead on both sides. According to Pakistani officials, Taliban forces opened fire on army outposts in the north-western frontier, seizing several positions. The assault followed accusations by Kabul that Pakistan had launched airstrikes on Afghan territory earlier in the week, including near the capital, Kabul. Pakistan’s military said it responded with “decisive” retaliatory operations, including ground raids and airstrikes on Taliban positions. The military reported 23 soldiers killed and 29 wounded, while claiming to have killed around 200 Taliban fighters and destroyed training facilities. Afghan officials disputed those figures. Taliban spokesperson Zabihullah Mujahid said 58 Pakistani soldiers were killed, compared to nine Taliban casualties. Since 2021, more than 2,500 people have been killed in TTP-led violence, according to official data. Pakistan’s army condemned the cross-border assault, calling it an attempt to “facilitate terrorism.” A military statement vowed that Pakistan “will not tolerate the use of Afghan soil for terrorism” and pledged to continue operations until all militant threats “emanating from Afghanistan” are eliminated. Security experts say the fighting reflects mounting frustration in Islamabad. “Pakistan’s patience with Kabul has worn thin as TTP attacks continue to escalate,” said Imtiaz Gul, a security analyst based in Islamabad. “This confrontation was a logical outcome of Afghanistan’s refusal to act decisively against TTP sanctuaries.” Meanwhile, Afghanistan’s foreign minister, Amir Khan Muttaqi, who was visiting India, denied hosting TTP fighters. He said the situation along the border was “under control” and that diplomatic allies, including Qatar and Saudi Arabia, had urged restraint.
