This is the most beautiful hike we've ever done. In December we hiked the Salkantay trail - a 5 day trek over mountains and through the jungles of Peru, culminating with Machu Picchu. The Salkantay Trail is similar to the Inca trail, although from what we heard, it is a bit more demanding... We went unguided with a loose plan and had zero accommodation booked. It turned out to be the best hike we've ever done and an epic adventure.
