Enhanced recovery protocols were explored, protocolised and implemented the first time in colorectal surgeries. They are focussed on preoperative, intraoperative and postoperative measures, not just related to surgery, but anaesthesia as well. Physical and pharmacological measures including promoting oral feeding preoperatively (esp. CHO), restoring oral feeding early, avoiding NGT, avoiding drains, early mobilisation with multimodal analgesia, early drain removal, PONV and Glycemic control, etc., Anaesthesiologists have a huge role to play in promoting and implementing the concepts of ERAS, with use of balanced anaesthesia.
