DEATH OF AN OPAL MINING TOWN: Mintabie, South Australia gemstone
In January, 2018, the Australian government announced the closing of the town of Mintabie, where, in some of the world's best opal was mined. Mintabie is in Aboriginal lands, although in a resolution, the government leased the town for a period of time, ending in the early 2000's. The reason for the closure of the town (and the mines) was, in my view due to the depletion of opal. Most of the miners left and the town declined, prompting closure. This video is intended as a celebration of the great opal town of Mintabie and its fabulous opal.
