Loyola Blakefield proudly honors Father William “Bill” Watters, S.J., and his legacy as an ideal Ignatian educator: innovative, charitable, and committed to justice. A member of the Loyola Blakefield faculty in the early 1970s, Fr. Watters played an instrumental role in the racial integration of the high school. His work at Loyola inspired his lifelong commitment to expanding educational access to the marginalized. As founder and former President of St. Ignatius Loyola Academy and founder of Cristo Rey Jesuit High School, Fr. Watters has cemented a legacy of providing affordable Jesuit education to Baltimore’s most underserved populations. His most recent effort, the Loyola Early Learning Center, opened its doors in September 2017 and serves boys and girls from ages two to five. A talented and determined fundraiser, Fr. Watters possesses a commitment and vision to inspire those in the most challenging of circumstances. His approach to being active in issues of education and social justice is simple: “Rather than curse the dark, light a candle.”
