• Hans Kann (1927-2005), Austrian Pianist Hans Kann (1927-2005) was a distinguished Austrian pianist, composer, and highly influential music pedagogue. Born in Vienna, he became a prominent figure in the city's rich musical landscape throughout the latter half of the 20th century. Kann studied piano and composition in Vienna and quickly established himself as a versatile performer. As a pianist, he possessed a formidable technique and was particularly noted for his insightful interpretations of Joseph Haydn's keyboard works. Beyond the classical repertoire, Kann was a fervent advocate for contemporary music, frequently premiering and championing pieces by Austrian and international composers of his time. He was also known for his skills in improvisation. His compositional output includes works for piano, chamber music, and numerous pedagogical pieces designed for teaching. However, Kann's most enduring legacy arguably lies in his work as an educator. He began teaching at the Vienna Academy of Music (now the University of Music and Performing Arts Vienna) in 1950, influencing generations of pianists over several decades. His pedagogical reach extended internationally, notably through significant teaching engagements in Japan, particularly at the Tokyo University of the Arts (Geidai), where he held guest professorships and left a lasting impact.
