Acute recurrent pancreatitis as the name itself indicates are repeated episodes of acute inflammation of the pancreas. Generally settles between 2 or more episodes that we coin the term recurrent pancreatitis when there are more than 2 episodes. Most of them times there may be predisposing causes for acute recurrent pancreatitis such as alcohol use or untreated gall stones. However in a significant proportion, we also see that there is no cause attributed to this acute recurrent pancreatitis. Does this lead to chronic pancreatitis? Yes, in some individuals with repeated episodes of acute pancreatitis, it leaves a residual scarring on the pancreas, which accumulates over a period of time leading to morphological changes in the pancreas gland leafing to scarring, calcification, stone formation and changes in the duct which is now called as chronic pancreatitis.
