Episode 1289 Alf (Bryan Mosley) tells Billy (Kenneth Farrington) there might be a job for him at the garage after hearing Elsie (Pat Phoenix) say Alan (Alan Browning) has work piling up. Alan is worried when Ray (Neville Buswell) says Deirdre (Anne Kirkbride) could end up a permanent fixture in the area. Alan wants to take Billy on but can’t promise him steady work. At Woburn Abbey, the group look around Queen Victoria’s state bedroom, where Stan (Bernard Youens) unwittingly asks the Duke of Bedford (Ian Russell) where the bar is. Elsie is firmly against Alan hiring Billy, saying he can’t be trusted. Hilda (Jean Alexander) is furious when she realises Stan is skipping parts of the tour to get back to supping. Len (Peter Adamson) shows Rita (Barbara Knox) around Biddulph’s, and Ray isn’t happy to discover she’s been given the manageress job he already promised to Deirdre. Len refuses to back down but suggests Deirdre could be Rita’s assistant instead. Alan reluctantly tells Billy there’s no job for him. Ena (Violet Carson) recognises tour guide Dora Wainwright (Kit Hoult), who introduces Ena, Minnie (Margot Bryant), Tom (David Holliday), Faye-Marie (Jane Casson) and Annie (Doris Speed) to the Duke. Ray tells Deirdre she isn’t getting the job and is relieved when she takes it well. Elsie confronts Deirdre about the night she fell asleep upstairs at No.11. Len hears from Alf that Walter Biddulph (Bert Palmer) isn’t rich from the shop but has got himself involved with a wealthy widow. With nothing keeping him in Weatherfield, Billy packs his suitcase and leaves the street once again.
