571 07/02/2026 Mark 6:34 “They were like sheep without a shepherd. He taught them at some length.” Pity for our human condition Compassion as instruction / Consolation and challenge / His pity moves to action The sheep cannot talk and describe their problems. That is where the shepherd matters. He is moved with compassion for their confusion and longing. He acts, not with a distant miracle, but by drawing near to teach and guide. The Good Shepherd saw that “they were like sheep without a shepherd. He taught them at some length.” Mark 6:34 This shepherd appears with a gaze of understanding, a heart of mercy, and the decisive action to provide what is most needed. In the image of the shepherd, we see Christ’s tender pity for our human condition. The crowd is not lost in trivialities, but in the deeper wilderness of the soul—without direction, vulnerable, and yearning for truth. Their hunger is not first for bread, but for meaning. Jesus, seeing this, does not merely offer a momentary comfort. He teaches them at some length. His compassion takes the form of instruction. He provides what they lack most: a shepherd’s guiding voice. We are that crowd, often lost and scattered by the world’s demands and our own anxieties. Christ, our true Shepherd, continues to teach us through the Scriptures and the Church, offering a sure path to the Father’s heart. But we are also called to share in his compassionate gaze. Seeing the crowds of our own day—those confused, isolated, or seeking purpose—we must point faithfully to the teachings of the Good Shepherd. His pity moves to action. It is our turn now to act like Christ.
