Waking up to pee at night (nocturia) is incredibly common — but it's not always normal, and it can be an early sign of problems with sleep, hormones, blood sugar, blood pressure, kidneys, heart health, or metabolic disease. In this video, Dr Alex (Emergency Medicine doctor) explains why you wake up to urinate at night, what causes it, when it matters, and what you can do to fix it. If you’re waking once or multiple times every night to pee, especially if this is new, worsening, or affecting your sleep, this video will help you understand whether it’s benign, fixable, or something that needs medical attention — and how doctors actually think about this symptom. Over the last decade working in A&E, I’ve seen people dismiss night-time symptoms for years — and I’ve also seen what happens when early warning signs are missed. Nocturia isn’t just a bladder issue. The pattern, frequency, and change over time tell us far more than people realise. As always, this is for educational purposes only. If you have any medical concerns then you must see your doctor. You should speak to your GP or clinician if: -You’re waking more than once per night -The pattern has changed recently -You have increased thirst, weight gain around the middle, fatigue -There is blood in your urine -You have swollen ankles, breathlessness, or poor sleep -You’re over 40–50 and symptoms are worsening TIMESTAMPS 00:00 – Why waking up to pee at night isn’t “just ageing” 02:02 – Late fluid intake (the most common cause) 03:10 – Alcohol and night-time urination 04:26 – Caffeine timing and sleep disruption 05:36 – Late, heavy, or salty evening meals 06:53 – Poor sleep vs bladder problems 08:09 – Overactive bladder (especially in women) 09:15 – Hormonal changes and menopause 10:28 – Enlarged prostate (BPH) in men 11:49 – Blood pressure and fluid redistribution 13:04 – Sleep apnoea (a commonly missed cause) 14:27 – Insulin resistance, prediabetes, and diabetes 15:51 – Kidney disease and heart failure 17:09 – Cancer (when to worry, when not to panic) 18:16 – What to do next and when to see your doctor #DrAlex #DoctorAlex #Nocturia #MensHealth #WomensHealth #Prediabetes #Longevity #InsulinResistance
