Buying a repaired Cat S car or Cat N car can be completely fine if you know in advance and the repair work has been carried out to a good standard but it should be cheaper as a result and you SHOULD know what you're buying. There is no requirement for insurers to declare their write-offs currently which means not all of them do (it can be a costly and time-consuming business) - this means thousands of cars like these are being sold perfectly legally as HPI clear but in fact have been subject to a previous write-off.
