The Little Island park is a new park located on the water of the West Side Highway, across 13th and 14th Streets and connected with land by bridges. This park was designed by London-based design practice Heatherwick Studio. They are very famous in the world of architecture, I first heard of them because of the design of the UK pavilion for the 2010 World Expo in Shanghai. Here in New York they are know for the Vessel, which is also relatively new attraction in the Hudson Yards. The park was built mostly by a private donation of Barry Diller and his wife Diane von Fürstenberg, with some funding from the New York City and state governments. Construction started in 2015 and had to be finished in 2018, but some lawsuits and cost overruns in 2017 almost canceled the plans to finish this project, at that time Barry Diller spent on the project around 200 Million dollars. But luckily State Government supported the idea of the park and funded the rest of the project, New York paid approx. 50 Millions. The final budget number is 260 million dollars. Little Island is supported by 132 pot-shaped kind of mushroom column structures., which are called "tulip pots”. They vary in height and are between 15 and 62 feet (4.6 and 18.9 m) above the projected waterline. Each pot has four to six lightweight concrete sections, referred to as "petals", which are designed to reduce the load on the pilings. Concrete pilings extend up to 200 feet (61 m) into the bottom of the Hudson River. They installed pre-cast concrete piles over the course of ten months, with a five-month break in between to allow for fish migration seasons. Mathews Nielsen Landscape Architects company were the landscape architects for the park. The landscape includes 35 tree species, 65 shrub species and 270 species of perennials and grasses. This is very impressive as the park’s size in only 2.4 acres (0.97 ha). The trees are planted in 4 feet (1.2 m) of soil, which is stabilized by geofibers and fed by a large irrigation system. The composition of the soil was engineered to reduce erosion, and evergreen plantings were used to shield the park from strong winds from the Hudson River.
