Media Coverage: India-Pacific Islands Sustainable Development Conference

The state visit by the Hon’ble Indian President Shri Pranab Mukherjee to Papua New Guinea (PNG) and New Zealand in April 2016, marked an important milestone in India’s extended ‘Act East’ policy. It flagged a new momentum that has emerged in India’s relations with the Pacific Island Countries (PICs) since the Hon’ble Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi assumed office in May, 2014 and subsequently instituted the Forum for India Pacific Islands Cooperation (FIPIC). In the course of its proceedings, the Conference will focus on the environmental challenges and threats facing the small island developing states (SIDS), as well as areas where India can collaborate. The Conference will provide for people-to-people dialogue to encourage an enabling atmosphere that fosters understanding, cooperation and collective action.
