Valledupar is the capital of the department of Cesar and the cradle of Vallenata Music, which is a musical genre uniquely Colombian. Located in the northwest of the Colombian Caribbean Coast in the foothills of the Sierra Nevada of Santa Marta and shores of the Guatapuri Colombian River, the city is an epicenter of Colombian music, culture and folklore. Some of the greatest composers of the Vallenata were born here, including Rafael Escalona and Domedes Diaz. The streets of Vallendupar are filled with the traditional sounds of Vallenata music wedged between a series of incredible monuments that pay homage to the city’s past. The historical roots of the area come alive through the traditional buildings and the neighboring indigenous groups lands. One of the most unique experiences that Valledupar offers is the Festival of the Vallenato Legend, which is the most important cultural event in the department.
