Presented on February 12, 2025 by Erika Huddle, MD & Brooklyn Varella, MD Consider a Formal Exercise Prescription as Initial Therapy for Patients with Symptoms of Depression Erika Huddle, MD Prescribing a specific exercise program, that specifies the frequency, intensity, duration, and type of exercise, produces a clinically meaningful result in patients with depression. After this presentation, attendees will be able to: • Understand a meta-analysis study that demonstrated improved clinical benefits in patients with depression being prescribed a specific exercise program. • Understand how to prescribe specific exercises individually tailored to each patient. • Create a measuring tool to gauge how well or not the specific exercise program is helping the patient with depression. Long-Term Glycemic Control and Dementia Risk in Type 2 Diabetes Brooklyn Varella, MD People with diabetes have higher incidences of dementia. Both hyperglycemia and hypoglycemia are associated with a decline in cognitive function. These findings support current clinical guideline recommendations for relaxed glycemic targets in older people with type 2 diabetes, while emphasizing the importance of avoiding sustained symptomatic hyperglycemia. After this presentation, attendees will be able to: • Address the critical challenge of predicting and preventing cognitive decline in type 2 diabetes patients during primary care management • Provide actionable insights that can modify clinical practice, improve patient counseling, and potentially reduce long-term cognitive complications • Equip physicians with evidence-based information and strategies to guide personalized diabetes management concerning glycemic goals
