The giant tortoise (Aldabrachelys gigantea) is a large land tortoise from the tortoise family (Testudinidae), which is endemic to the Seychelles Islands. It is one of the longest-lived creatures in the world. The Seychelles giant tortoise feeds mainly on leaves, fruits and shoots of plants, and occasionally on animal remains. The Seychelles giant tortoise (Aldabrachelys gigantea hololissa), also known as the Seychelles domed tortoise, is a subspecies of tortoise from the genus Aldabrachelys. The length of the shell of an adult tortoise is up to 120 cm, it can weigh up to 200 kg and it lives up to 160 years. Its powerful legs also serve as a support for its heavy body. Its neck is very long and large, which helps the tortoise to use branches up to one meter from the ground as a source of food. Although they are typically slow and cautious, they are capable of considerable speed. They live in the dry, rocky areas of the Seychelles Islands and Aldabra Island in the Indian Ocean. Seychelles giant tortoises dig underground burrows or rest in swamps to keep cool during the hot day. Their numbers declined during the 18th and 19th centuries due to hunting and egg collection, and they are now threatened with extinction. Giant tortoises are among the longest-living animals on the planet. Some Aldabra giant tortoises are over 200 years old, but this is difficult to verify because they have outlived their human observers.
