Einstein’s Dreams: Don’t Go To Mars, from the Flight Manifest album release show at Bop Shop Records, Nov. 2, 2025. Written and arranged by Eric Heveron-Smith. This concert recording was made possible in part by a grant from the Genesee Valley Council on the Arts. An open letter to the billionaire space race club, couched in a warning that moving to a new place (even another planet) won’t solve all your problems. The capitalist technocrats who amped up the ecological crises on Earth are pushing the idea that we need to terraform a new planet- but if we go there carrying all the ideas and baggage that caused us to ruin Earth’s natural balance, how do we expect things to go? Space exploration is a wonderful thing, but without uprooting the exploitive, oppressive systems that led us to the current state of the planet (or understanding the ways of nature), there’s no way we will successfully establish a thriving, balanced ecosystem in a dry, sterile, actively hostile NEW planet. Lyrics: I know you’re talking ‘bout leaving Going someplace new Pack up, start fresh Leave behind the old you Maybe you think it’ll be different I guess you’re looking for change A new atmosphere, A landscape you can rearrange But don’t go to Mars Don’t leave this place You can’t leave yourself behind Even if you go to space I know you’re tired of fighting Well baby, so am I The planet’s filling with garbage and carbon, and it Makes me wanna cry You think it’s too far gone You wanna start from scratch But how far can you get if you’re looking at the old map? So don’t go to Mars Don’t leave this place You can’t leave yourself behind Even if you go to space Don’t go to Mars (chorus repeats) Wherever you go there you are Copyright Eric Heveron-Smith 2025-present, all rights reserved.
