•• Warning - long unedited video ahead. Not intended for entertainment. If you’re looking for fast-paced action and good editing, this may not be for you! •• This video shows me working on the set up of a lovely mahogany Vintage cutaway electro-acoustic guitar brought to me by singer/songwriter Claire Bruff. She found that she played this guitar less than her other guitar because the action was too high and caused strain. I was confident that I could perform a ‘budget’ setup on this guitar (without levelling the frets) and still hugely improve how it played. You’ll see that I sand down the bridge saddle to remove a calculated amount of height and also check and ensure that the 1st fret action was low and uniform across all the strings. I also set the neck relief, polished the strings with 2 grades of fret rubber and give the whole guitar an overall clean. The result was a guitar with far easier action which was immediately noticeable when Claire came to collect it. Tip: because most acoustic guitars don’t have their bridge saddles sanded down (whereas most electric guitars will have had their bridge saddles lowered as far as they can go without buzzing) you can make a pretty big improvement without the need for fret levelling and this enables me to offer that kind of set up a lower price. If a customer wants an acoustic guitar action that’s getting close to an electric guitar action (I have a couple set up this way myself and they play beautifully) then fret levelling is usually required.
