Specialist Orthopaedic Surgeon Shameem Sampath from Spire Manchester Hospital is the only English surgeon to use computer-aided surgery to treat ACL injuries. He says the technique creates "more accurate" results and better long-term recovery. Paul Gascoigne, Alan Shearer, Roy Keane, Ruud van Nistelrooy and Michael Owen all suffered from the ACL injury - which can be career-limiting or ending for sportspeople. Mr Sampath explained how the surgery worked whilst operating on patient Darryl Messer, who consented to its use.
