From 1984 to 1998 Mick Thomas was the lead singer and driving force behind the Australian folk-rock group Weddings Parties Anything. Since then he’s had a very productive solo career as well as a number of other projects, the latest being Mick Thomas’ Roving Commission. With the release of their eighth album, “GoComeBack”, Mick Thomas’ Roving Commission undertook an extensive tour, of which this show was at about the half way mark. As well as six songs from the new album, 14 other songs from right across Mick’s musical career were played. I recorded six: In Your Room (00:07) The Infanticide of Marie Farrar (04:54) Monday’s Experts (08:17) For the Dirt Under Your Nails (11:33) Away, Away (15:50) For a Short Time (20:45) It’s been a couple of years since I last had the pleasure of an outdoor gig at The Servo at Port Kembla. It was a lovely warm evening with a light breeze. The perfect setting for some live music. But outdoor recordings do bring with them their own specific problems, and of course, my microphone couldn’t escape the sound of the wind (most noticeable in the first and last songs I videoed). Also the lighting was very basic, a couple of red lights shining up from the ground. However, the overall sound quality was very good, and the twilight sky was wonderful. It was one of those shows which you really needed to be there to fully appreciate.
