When Alex Baker logged into The Clubhouse Roundtable this past Friday night, I knew that we were going to discuss success and that it wouldn't be based on splits for local legends on Strava. We were about to talk about something far more uncomfortable when it comes to the topic of success. As endurance athletes, we’re conditioned to measure everything. Pace per mile. FTP. Weekly mileage. PRs. As entrepreneurs, we are also measuring success and that can include revenue goals. Download numbers. Social media growth. If it can be tracked, we tend to track it. And if we’re honest? We quietly judge ourselves by it. On this episode of The Clubhouse Roundtable, Santino, Joe, Derek, Alex, and I pulled back the curtain on what success actually means to us right now. We discuss what it meant when we were 22 as well but the main focus is on today. I opened up about launching my company with a five-year plan that felt airtight. The spreadsheets were neat. The projections were bold. The confidence? Through the roof. Fast forward to today… and those numbers? Let’s just say Excel and I are no longer speaking. But get this, somewhere along the way, I realized the most meaningful success in my life isn’t sitting in a bank account. It’s sitting across from me on these Friday nights. It’s the friendships we’ve built. It’s the vulnerability that shows up in this space. It’s knowing that we can talk about fear, doubt, parenting, marriage, ambition, and still show up the next day to train like everyday athletes chasing something bigger than medals. Joe talked about redefining success for his kids and how not once does money enter the conversation. Derek shared how growing up around excess taught him that wealth and happiness aren’t even close to the same thing. Santino broke down the illusion of social media and how he teaches his daughter that the highlight reel isn’t real life. And Alex? Alex is running marathons across the world not because he’s hunting podiums… but because 2019 Alex wouldn’t have even gotten off the couch. That evolution is a definition of success. We’ve all changed. I used to chase financial milestones like they were finish lines. Now? I’d rather be time-rich and checkbook-stable than checkbook-rich and time-poor. That is a shift in perspective and one attached to growth and maturity. What we found out in this conversation is that redefining success isn’t giving up. We have realized that as life moves forward and changes so will our definitions of success as well as failure. There will be changes in how we perceive ourselves which is a good thing. For me, success today means being present with Lori. It means showing up here with these guys every other Friday night. It means building Run Tri Bike and the Everyday Athlete Clubhouse in a way that can’t be measured in dollars but can absolutely be felt. Are you behind? Has your version of success changed?
