What is Therapeutic Gastroenterology? Therapeutic Gastroenterology refers to the branch of gastroenterology that focuses on treating diseases and disorders of the digestive system, rather than just diagnosing them. While diagnostic gastroenterology involves procedures like endoscopy or colonoscopy to identify problems, therapeutic gastroenterology involves using those same tools (and more advanced ones) to treat conditions. Therapeutic gastroenterology goes beyond finding the problem—it actively treats digestive system issues through advanced, often minimally invasive endoscopic techniques. It's crucial in managing many GI conditions without the need for open surgery. What type of procedures perform in Therapeutic Gastroenterology? In therapeutic gastroenterology, both upper GI endoscopy and lower GI endoscopy (colonoscopy) are used not only for diagnosis but also for performing various treatments. Through upper GI endoscopy, doctors can remove polyps, control bleeding from ulcers or varices, dilate strictures, place stents, remove foreign bodies, and insert PEG feeding tubes. In lower GI endoscopy, therapeutic procedures include polyp removal, stopping bleeding from diverticula or angiodysplasia, dilating strictures, placing colonic stents for obstruction, and removing foreign bodies or impacted stool. These minimally invasive techniques help manage gastrointestinal conditions effectively without major surgery.
