A shocking and deeply disturbing incident took place at Durg Railway Station, Chhattisgarh, on July 25, 2025, where two Catholic nuns—Sister Vandana Francis and Sister Preeti Mary—were illegally detained by Bajrang Dal members and falsely accused of religious conversion while escorting three young women who had full parental consent and valid documentation for employment at a church-run hospital. Adding to the seriousness of the incident, Jyoti Sharma, reportedly linked with Bajrang Dal, aggressively accused the nuns, tried to manipulate the police, and allegedly attempted to coerce the three girls into changing their statements. Her hostile and unlawful behavior created immense pressure on the authorities and worsened the trauma faced by the victims. This mob-style vigilantism has sparked nationwide condemnation: MP K.C. Venugopal wrote to Home Minister Amit Shah, calling it a gross miscarriage of justice and demanded immediate action against the perpetrators. He termed it a direct attack on the constitutional rights and dignity of minorities. Kerala CM Pinarayi Vijayan also wrote to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, demanding his personal intervention and calling for a transparent and impartial probe. He emphasized how the detained nuns were even denied communication with their families. The Catholic Bishops' Conference of India (CBCI) called the incident a serious violation of minority rights, appealing to the PM and Union Home Minister to stop the rising trend of harassment under the guise of religious conversion. The two nuns were booked under human trafficking charges, despite having legal documents. Church sources believe this was a deliberate attempt to frame them. The truth is, they were simply accompanying the girls for legitimate employment. This is not an isolated event. There has been a disturbing pattern of orchestrated attacks on Christian missionaries, pastors, and social workers, particularly in states like Chhattisgarh, where hate groups exploit religious sentiment to spread fear and division. MPs like Benny Behanan, Hibi Eden, and Anto Antony are preparing to raise this issue in Parliament, calling it a direct violation of Article 25, which guarantees freedom of religion in India. 🔴 It’s time to stand against hate politics, protect human dignity, and ensure rule of law prevails over mob mentality. Justice for the nuns must be swift and transparent, and those spreading communal hatred—including figures like Jyoti Sharma—must be held accountable.
