Travellers heading southwest on the B4396 from the picturesque Penybontfawr, within Dyffryn Tanat, will in due course pass through the idyllic hamlet of Hirnant, en-route to the aqueous delights of Llyn Efyrnwy (aka 'Lake Vyrnwy' to yer average tourist). Few, save locals, will stop here to check out the former church dedicated to St Illog (a 6-7th Century hermit), now a Community Centre? Less still will choose to take the public footpath climbing steeply uphill to the west, where can still be found Ffynnon Illog, the holy one's attributed 'sacred well', naturally said to cure many diseases back in the day. But hey, that was only yesterday... Yeah, The Citizen Cairn has 'bronze' on the mind - we'll leave the gold to those that crave such stuff... oh, and to Spandau Ballet, naturally - slogging pitifully away to eventually arrive at the 1,709ft peak of Carnedd Das Eithin far above. Sure enough, this small summit is crowned by the 'hollowed-out' remains of a fine burial cairn still some 6ft high and 66ft in diameter. Excavated in c1800, CPAT notes that "a piece of brass kettle (possibly a small pot or cauldron) and some coins were found", together with "pieces of armour" nearby. The monument is a superb viewpoint taking in Pumlumon, The Arans and, to the north, the great hillfort Craig Rhiwarth and the high tops of Y Berwyn.
