OOLS - Online Optom Learning Series - Session 124 (25th April 2021) Here we bring you the 124th session of our online learning series, live on 25th April 2021 at 12:00 PM IST. _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ All about this Session: Dr. Uday Kumar Addepalli, a public health optometrist and a researcher begins by explaining what is Glaucoma? He shortly mentions the prevalence of glaucoma and its different types. He also elaborates on the projected glaucoma prevalence for 2040. Some of the common risk factors for glaucoma are age, genetics, and high refractive errors. He briefly provides an overview of the how-to suspect for glaucoma in a primary eye care clinic and how to diagnosis glaucoma with the right equipment. Dr . Addepalli, enlist some of the skills required by an optometrist to diagnose glaucoma. Skills 1. History taking (11:10) 2. Clinical examination (11:45) 3. Gonioscopy (12:35) 4. Fundus examination (13:07) 5. Grading of the disc (13:16) Then, we learn about glaucoma disease stages and when and how it is possible to detect the disease. Some of the common challenges optometrists have to diagnose glaucoma. Challenges 1. Training and Experience (15:00) 2. Individual motivation to expand the skill sets (17:43) 3. Improve skill sets to avoid false positives (18:15) 4. Develop referral pathway (18:25) 5. Type of practice (19:10) We learn about the scope of an optometrist in glaucoma detection and an overview of the importance of patient history, slit-lamp examination, disc assessment, other necessary tests and diagnostic equipment. Lastly, we discuss some interesting scenarios to learn about glaucoma diagnosis. Scenario 1 Normal or Glaucomatous (25:50) Scenario 2 SDOCT (29:40) Dr. Addepalli concludes the talk by describing a way forward for optometrists in glaucoma detection. He describes the success of the Specsavers model to integrate optometrists in glaucoma detection. The session ends with a question and answers session with the audience.
