#korea #conquerors #koreanhistory #history #historyofkorea (episode 22) Gwanggaeto the Great 광개토대왕 (374-413) was the 19th king of Goguryeo 고구려. He is known for expanding the limits of Goguryeo, one of the three kingdoms of Korea along Baekje and Silla. He conquered the Liaodong peninsula 요동 which was part of the first recorded kingdom of Korea: Gojoseon. His kingdom extended to parts of Western Manchuria, Inner Mongolia and even modern-day Russia. The Gwanggaeto stele 광개토왕릉비 was a major archeological discovery. It documents Gwanggaeto's life and achievements as well as the foundation of Goguryeo by its founder, Chumong 추모성왕 / Jumong / Dongmyeong. It’s made out of a single block of granite and it’s 6.39m tall. It was erected in 414 by his son Jangsu 장수왕. The stele is also shrouded in a controversy around the year 391 (신묘, 辛卯年). Gwanggaeto often fought with Wa, a kingdom from present-day Japan. He also fought against Baekje, won and eventually subjugating it. Gwanggaeto is one of two rulers in Korean history with the title Great, the other one being King Sejong the Great. He’s remembered as a hero that restored glory to Goguryeo and made it a major power in East Asia at that time.
