In the spring of 2019, I quit my job as a television journalist to chase a dream I’ve had for many years: to book a one-way ticket and travel the world with no idea of when I would be coming back. Making this choice was one of the scariest decisions I’ve ever had to make. I walked away from a job that I had spent a decade pursuing and abandoned a life of financial security. I worked tirelessly to get where I was and had sacrificed a lot. But at 34 years old, I felt that if I didn’t do it now, I might never have the opportunity again. The trip was everything I could have hoped for. I went to spectacular places and met beautiful people. But it was far from perfect. This is not going to be some shallow exercise in making my life look cooler than yours. I slept in uncomfortable beds, used dirty bathrooms, got lonely, and spent lots of time and money. I lost relationships and had to restart my career. I want to share all of this with you. Up until then, my longest trip had been three weeks. I often found myself counting down the days, wishing I had more time. This was going to be different. My adventure took me from the rich jungles of Costa Rica to the exotic Islands of Panama to the windswept desert of Colombia. I did extreme sports in mainland Ecuador and dove with sea lions and penguins in the Galapagos Islands. I trekked across Mexico, swimming in crystal-clear cenotes in the Yucatan, surfing breaks on the Pacific coast, and exploring the bustling metropolis of Mexico City. As a video journalist, I’ve always had a passion for photography and cinematography. But I wanted to use the trip to take my filmmaking to the next level. At first, I started making videos about my travels just for practice and for the enjoyment of friends and family. Eventually, I was able to work with travel companies to get free or heavily-discounted trips. I also made a documentary film that was later accepted into my first film festival. In this intro episode, I explain my inspiration for this adventure and how I prepared for the trip. If you have any questions or comments, please drop me a line! Cheers!
