[Anchor Lead] The Seoul metropolitan area is home to many livestock farms, but there are not many slaughterhouses. Many farmers resort to slaughtering their own livestock illegally. Mobile slaughterhouses were introduced at a market in Seongnam City for the first time to improve hygiene standards and make things more convenient for both farmers and consumers. [Pkg] This farmer raises more than two thousand Korean native chickens. Because he sells fewer than a hundred chickens a month to wholesale dealers, he faces many difficulties in finding slaughtering facilities. In many cases, goats and native chickens are slaughtered illegally, as their numbers are relatively smaller compared to other kinds of livestock and slaughtering them on time can be quite a challenge. To address the problem, mobile slaughterhouses in the form of remodeled containers have been introduced at Moran Market in the city of Seongnam. They can process 50 goats and one thousand native chickens daily. The slaughtering process also includes a livestock inspection and sanitary packaging before the products are supplied to consumers or wholesale dealers. The Gyeonggi-do Provincial Government plans to expand the use of mobile slaughterhouses and have them acquire the Hazard Analysis Critical Control Point food safety certification.
