In very advanced cases of twin-twin transfusion syndrome, families may need to make the difficult choice to try to save one twin. http://fetalsurgery.chop.edu/ttts When TTTS is very advanced and the at-risk twin is unlikely to survive, an intervention called selective cord occlusion (radiofrequency ablation or bipolar cord coagulation) can stop the blood flow to one twin with the hope of protecting the co-twin. The Center for Fetal Diagnosis and Treatment at Children's Hospital of Philadelphia provides families with the emotional support they need during what can be an agonizing decision for parents carrying twins with TTTS. Counseling and support services are available to families to help with any psychosocial or emotional needs.
