Banksy is one of the most famous and elusive artists of modern times, known for his provocative street art and political commentary. Despite his global fame, Banksy’s real identity remains a mystery. He is widely believed to have been born in Bristol, England, in the early 1970s, though little is known about his early life. Some speculate that his real name might be Robin Gunningham, but Banksy has neither confirmed nor denied this claim. Early Career and Style Banksy’s rise to prominence began in the 1990s, during the vibrant street art scene in Bristol. Unlike many graffiti artists of the time, he adopted the use of stencils, which allowed him to create detailed and fast work, minimizing his time in public spaces where he risked being caught. His early pieces were marked by a combination of dark humor, political satire, and anti-establishment themes, often taking aim at consumerism, war, and societal inequality. One of Banksy’s earliest and most famous pieces is “The Mild Mild West” (1997), which features a teddy bear throwing a Molotov cocktail at riot police. This piece, created in his hometown of Bristol, was an early indication of the kind of bold political statements that would come to define his career. Notable Works Banksy’s works have become iconic and widely recognized across the world. Some of his most famous pieces include: “Girl with Balloon”: This is perhaps Banksy’s most famous image, depicting a young girl reaching for a heart-shaped balloon. The work is seen as a symbol of hope and has been replicated in various forms across different cities. “Flower Thrower”: Painted on a wall in Jerusalem, this mural shows a rioter throwing a bouquet of flowers instead of a weapon, a powerful anti-war statement. “Napalm”: This piece juxtaposes an image of a napalm attack victim from the Vietnam War with corporate mascots Ronald McDonald and Mickey Mouse, critiquing consumer culture and the desensitization to violence. West Bank Barrier Murals: In 2005, Banksy painted a series of murals on the Israeli-built West Bank barrier, highlighting the conflict in the region. These works became symbols of protest against the political situation in Israel and Palestine. “Devolved Parliament”: This large painting depicts chimpanzees sitting in the British Parliament, offering a scathing critique of British politics. It gained renewed attention during the Brexit debates and sold for £9.9 million ($12.1 million) at auction in 2019. “Love is in the Bin” – The Shredding Incident One of the most famous moments in Banksy’s career occurred in 2018 when his artwork “Girl with Balloon” was sold at a Sotheby’s auction for £1.04 million ($1.4 million). Moments after the sale, the artwork began to shred itself via a hidden shredder built into the frame by Banksy. The partially shredded work was renamed “Love is in the Bin” and became even more valuable due to the stunt. In 2021, it was resold at auction for a record £18.58 million ($25.4 million), making it Banksy’s most expensive piece to date. This act became symbolic of Banksy’s critique of the commercialization of art, where even the destruction of art becomes commodified.
