Agio Pnevma Summit - The White Mountains of Crete | Season 1 - Episode 6(4K)

The White Mountains of Crete is a unique mountain range unlike any other in the world. At an altitude of 2000 meters they form an alpine desert, with an otherworldly scenery. The terrain is dark full of dips, potholes and craters, while the mountaintops are strikingly white, because of the limestone. This unique geological formations create a trully incredible lunar landscape, that enchants any who will hike there. Follow us on our journey to hike and explore the White Mountains of Crete. In the span of 20 episodes we will hike in the alpine desert, reach the most extraordinary peaks, visit their breathtaking gorges. In this episode we attempt a climp to Agio Pnevma Summit (2262m) starin from Gournes. We tried this during Winter so we were up against variable weather conditions, rain, snow, ice and thick fog. It was an incredible experience but just below the summit we had to turn back because of the steep slopes. But we returned, a few months later to approach Agio Pnevma from Volikas Shelter, also passing by the Summit of Spathi (2046m). Agio Pnevma means ''Holy Spirit'' in greek. The name was given beacause of the chappel at the summit. This chappel has no roof, and has not yet been dated. It is believed to be ancient 'Summit Sanctum'.
