Due to the extended length of this material, Part 3 of a four-part lecture series on cardiac vasoactive drips will be broken up into two sections. Part 3A will cover vasoconstrictors used for refractory shock and Part 3B will be a separate installment that will cover rescue agents. In part 3A, the pharmacology and clinical use of the non-catecholamine group of vasopressors, vasopressin and angiotensin II, will be discussed. Their specific roles in the treatment of refractory shock will be outlined. Mechanism of action, dosage, adverse effects, and clinical use for each of the non-catecholamine drips will be reviewed. The use of corticosteroids and inotropes in refractory shock will also be covered.
