Shoulder and elbow surgeon Dr. Daniel Schwartz was recently featured on ESPN/KIRO radio talking about shoulder separation with IRG Physical Therapy President Shannon O'Kelley. Dr. Schwartz explained that shoulder separation occurs when your collarbone is injured at its connection to the shoulder blade. This can happen to anyone who takes a direct blow to the upper shoulder. In most cases, shoulder separations are treated non-operatively with ice, anti-inflammatories and physical therapy. Patients typically heal in one to two months. If separation is severe however, surgery may be required.
