The advent of more advanced diagnostic testing has allowed us to appreciate that the diagnosis of canine lymphoma is not necessarily as simple as previously thought. It is apparent that there are many different subtypes of the disease, and the ideal method of classifying the disease in individual patients is being refined. The goal is for canine lymphoma to be easily classified in such a way to provide the clinician with a clear understanding of what will be the ideal treatment for that patient, what will be their likely chance of achieving remission, and what will be the average survival time. The aim of this seminar is to provide the veterinary general practitioner with current information regarding canine lymphoma. The first half of this seminar discusses some of the ways we can classify lymphoma: anatomic, histopathologic, immunophenotypic, and grading classification is included. More advanced diagnostic tests are explained, and their role in classification. The second half of this seminar looks at the approach to staging a dog diagnosed with lymphoma: which diagnostic tests could and should be used, and what is the information we are trying to glean from these tests. Following this, we briefly touch on some of the novel therapeutic options that are currently being researched, to hopefully continue to improve the overall outcomes for dogs with lymphoma.
