This is a rare post, in that it's a Cardinals loss, and I'm putting it up for two reasons: 1) McGwire hits Home Run #54, as he marches ever closer to breaking Roger Maris' Single Season Record of 61 Homers. 2) The 9th inning of this game is the perfect microcosm of the biggest problem the late 90s Cardinals had - pitching, especially in the back end of the bullpen. The 1998 Cardinals won 83 contests, the same number of games as the 2006 World Championship team (think about that for a minute), but came nowhere near the postseason, thanks in part to their THIRTY ONE blown saves. Watch in horror as a parade of St. Louis relievers can't seem to stop the soon-to-be 108-loss Florida Marlins. It's embarrassing. Personal Story: I was dragged to confirmation classes on Wednesday nights as a kid. On this particular Wednesday night, my classes got done around the 7th inning, and I listened to this game with my Dad on the half hour drive back home. Even though I couldn't see what was happening, I was shocked at how a team could blow a six-run lead to a team like the Marlins.
