Today I hiked to the Ely’s Peak Railroad Tunnel, a long-abandoned railroad tunnel hidden in the hills above Duluth, Minnesota. This historic 520-foot tunnel was built in 1911 by the Duluth, Winnipeg & Pacific Railway to cut directly through Ely’s Peak during the height of the iron ore boom. What was once an active rail line moving ore from Minnesota’s Iron Range is now a quiet, rugged hike located within the Magney-Snively Natural Area — and part of the Superior Hiking Trail. The tunnel itself is raw and unfinished, with jagged rock walls, loose stone underfoot, and water dripping from the ceiling — especially after rain or during winter freezes. It’s dark, damp, and a little eerie, which makes it one of the most unique hikes in the Duluth area. A flashlight is definitely recommended. This hike is a must-see for anyone visiting Duluth who’s looking for something off the beaten path — whether you’re into hiking, abandoned places, railroad history, or North Shore adventure. If you enjoy hiking Minnesota’s hidden gems, abandoned tunnels, and rugged trails along Lake Superior, make sure to subscribe for more outdoor adventures. ⸻ #ElysPeak #SuperiorHikingTrail #DuluthMN #AbandonedTunnel #MinnesotaHiking Antone Outdoors is about getting outside and keeping it real.
