One moment it is said that Hu Jintao is making a comeback; the next moment that Wen Jiabao is governing; then that Wang Yang is about to succeed—endless and unceasing. This has led a large number of people to place limitless fantasies upon the political elders within the CCP. Truly a great Chinese dream. Year after year, as the year’s end approaches, according to official CCP news, on the eve of the Spring Festival, Xi Jinping and other Party and state leaders respectively visited, or entrusted responsible comrades of relevant departments to visit, Hu Jintao, Zhu Rongji, Li Ruihuan, Wen Jiabao, and 125 other former Party and state leaders who are still alive. Compared with last year’s Spring Festival communiqué about “visiting veteran comrades,” this year’s list is shorter by five names: Xu Qiliang, Re Di, Zou Jiahua, Wang Bingqian, and Peng Peiyun. The final paragraph of the communiqué is particularly interesting: The veteran comrades expressed their gratitude for this, gave heartfelt support to General Secretary Xi Jinping as the core of the Party Central Committee and the core of the whole Party, and highly evaluated the remarkable achievements made by the Party and the state in various undertakings over the past year. The veteran comrades expressed the hope that the entire Party, the entire military, and the people of all ethnic groups throughout the country would unite even more closely around the Party Central Committee with Comrade Xi Jinping at its core; adhere to the guidance of Xi Jinping Thought on Socialism with Chinese Characteristics for a New Era; fully implement the spirit of the Party’s 20th National Congress and the successive plenary sessions of the 20th Central Committee; deeply comprehend the decisive significance of the “Two Establishes”; strengthen the “Four Consciousnesses,” firm up the “Four Confidences,” and achieve the “Two Upholds”; with a spirit of historical initiative overcome difficulties, withstand risks, and meet challenges; strive to achieve a good beginning for the “15th Five-Year Plan”; and continuously open up a new situation in comprehensively advancing the building of a strong nation and the great cause of national rejuvenation through Chinese-style modernization. There is a very simple question here: since no meeting was convened to pass any resolution or consensus, from where does such a unified stance arise? It appears that the old fellows have once again been represented. At the same time, this shows that the old fellows fundamentally have no political voice whatsoever; they only have the part of being represented and of having statements made on their behalf.
