ENGAGE 17 - Looking back into the future of South African higher education

ENGAGE 17 will reflect on the past and deliberate on the future of our universities. In 2003, the higher education sector in South Africa found itself not merely confronting the imminence of extensive restructuring through mergers but was also contending with approximately 30 policy documents that exerted influence upon the sector. Advancing to 2023, a predominantly negative discourse persists regarding the governance of our institutions, the financial afflictions that are plaguing NSFAS, the dearth of leadership emanating from the sector, continuing institutional disruptions, and other related challenges. Exploring these issues was Prof Barney Pityana, former Vice-Chancellor of UNISA (and former Chair of what is now USAf).
