Esther's Story: Why are Women Dying While Giving Birth in Nigeria?

In this #GivingBirthInNigeria narrative, Midwife Esther tells a story about a young woman who died while trying to give birth in Bayelsa. Esther referred the young woman and her mother to another facility, but instead her mother chose to take her to a prophet who instructed them to perform some rituals and deliver the baby in the community. Unfortunately after a week in labour, the young woman had a stillbirth, and six hours after delivery, the woman herself died. The #GivingBirthInNigeria project is working to catalyse accountability for maternal deaths and envisions a Nigeria where no woman dies while giving life.
