Papal Visit Spain Madrid Adoration 1982

POPE SPEECH JOHN PAUL II TO THE MEMBERS OF SPANISH NIGHT ADORATION Madrid, Sunday October 31, 1982 God is here! Come, worshipers. Let us worship Christ the Redeemer! one. With these beautiful words the faithful Spanish people sing their faith in the Eucharist. I was glad for this when I learned of your desire to participate with you in a Eucharistic adoration. Joyful I am, together with Jesus Sacramented, with you, members of the Spanish Night Worship, who, with so many other Christians who join you in so many corners of Spain, have a deep awareness of the close relationship between spiritual vitality and apostolic of the Church and the Holy Eucharist. With your evenings of adoration you pay tribute of faith and love ardent to the real presence of Our Lord Jesus Christ in this Sacrament, with his Body and Blood, Soul and Divinity, under consecrated species. This presence reminds us that the God of our faith is not a distant being, but a very close God, whose delights are to be with the children of men (Cf. Prov. 8, 31). A Father who sends us his Son, so that we may have life and have it in abundance (Cf. Jn 10, 10). A Son, and our Brother, who with his Incarnation has truly become Man, while still being God, and has wanted to stay among us “until the consummation of the world ” (Cf. Mt 28, 20). 2. It is understood by faith that the Holy Eucharist constitutes the greatest gift that Christ has offered and offers permanently to his Bride. It is the root and summit of Christian life and of all action of the Church. It is our greatest treasure that contains “all the spiritual good of the Church ” (Presbyterorum Ordinis, 5). She must jealously care as regards this mystery and affirm it in its entirety, as a central point and proof of that authentic spiritual renewal proposed by the last council. In this consecrated Host the words of Christ are summarized, his life offered to the Father by us and the glory of his risen Body. In your hours before the Holy Host you have warned that this presence of Emmanuel, God-with-us, is both a mystery of faith, a pledge of hope and the source of charity with God and among men. 3. The mystery of a faith, because the crucified and risen Lord is truly present in the Eucharist, not only during the celebration of the Holy Sacrifice, but while the sacramental species subsist. Our praise, worship, thanksgiving, and petition to the Holy Trinity, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, take root in this mystery of faith. That same presence of the Body and Blood of Christ, under the species of bread and wine, constitute a articulation between time and eternity, and provide us with a pledge of hope that encourages our walk. The Holy Eucharist, in fact, in addition to being a sacramental testimony of the first coming of Christ, is at the same time a constant announcement of his second glorious coming, at the end of time. Garment of future hope and encouragement, also hopeful, for our march towards eternal life. Before the sacred Host we hear again the sweet words: “Come to me, all of you who are tired and burdened, that I will relieve you ” (Mt 11, 28). The sacramental presence of Christ is also source of love. Because “love with love is paid ”, you say in these lands of Spain. Love, first of all, to Christ himself. The Eucharistic encounter is, in effect, an encounter of love. That is why it is essential to approach Him with devotion and purified from all serious sin. And love for our brothers. Because the authenticity of our union with the sacramented Jesus must be translated into our true love for all men, beginning with those who are closest. It should be noted in the way of treating your own family, colleagues and neighbors; in the effort to live in peace with everyone; in the readiness to reconcile and forgive when necessary. In this way, the Holy Eucharist will be a leaven of charity and bond of that unity of the Church loved by Christ and advocated by the Second Vatican Council. 4. I end by encouraging you, dear worshipers and children all of Spain, to a deep Eucharistic piety. It will bring you closer and closer to the Lord. And he will ask you for the opportune recourse to sacramental confession, which leads to the Eucharist, as the Eucharist leads to confession. How many times the night of silent adoration can also be the propitious moment of the encounter with the sacramental forgiveness of Christ!
