Nothing can prepare you for the profound isolation of an undiagnosed illness. For Mason, a school year that started with soccer and friends shifted abruptly when he started having constant stomach pains. Diagnosed with Median Arcuate Ligament Syndrome (MALS), Mason would need surgery to treat the rare disorder that was compressing the main artery in his stomach. Relieved to have a care plan but concerned about the complex surgery, Mason and his mom were eager to explore minimally invasive surgical options. Options that could mean a shorter hospital stay, less pain, quicker recovery time and fewer surgery scars for Mason. Surgeons at Nationwide Children’s Hospital use minimally invasive techniques whenever possible to reduce pain, length of hospital stays and the appearance of surgical scars.
